“Rukus Avenue has always been a friend to me first and suddenly it dawned on me that these lovely people were actually going to be able to help me scheme this album to life.”
This is indeed what the last year of creation has been about for Mathur.
So who is this album geared towards?
“It sounds cheesy but everyone and anyone. If you’re South Asian like me, you’ll relate and laugh. And if you’re not, you’ll learn and laugh. And if you’re breathing, you’ll REALLY relate and laugh, and maybe even cry a little. I try to use humor simply to bridge difficult topics to talk about, like death, or pressure from our parents. But I also use it to teach people who we are, so they don’t have to think of stereotypical things when they try to picture what India is about.”
Nishimura, who works closely with Mathur on Public Relations and Web Presence, is a fan of the project.
“We all believe in what she is doing, and sometimes we sit there and think, ‘Man, this is going to be so different, it’s scary. But if you go the safe route, nothing changes. Everything stays the same.”

It’s 1:00 pm. The slump in this writer’s day. Rasika Mathur gets up to microwave a Jasmine Rice and Green Curry box from Trader Joe’s. “I have been trying to write “Back That Thang Up” for 8 months now. Why is this taking so long?”
Um, maybe because she’s a perfectionist Virgo who’s scrutinizing every rhyme? Let’s back this thing up for a moment. This song will be a tech-savvy computer nerd’s dream, (provided he has a sense of humor and loves the sometimes curse-filled, sometimes enlightening words of a certain little, brown funnyladki), and only one of the songs off of this “buffet of musical comedy delights.”
Rasika Mathur, who proudly proclaims herself as the “non-hoey Indian chick on Wild ‘N’ Out,” is using all of her improv, writing, and newly embraced musical abilities to concoct this project, which follows on the heels of her 4-season run on Nick Cannon’s MTV show, where young kids of every background would watch her joke-rap battle celebrities like Warren Sapp and Jamie Kennedy.
“I felt like that experience reignited what I loved about music and creating my own songs and videos.” She is referring to a childhood spent making parody music videos with her sister on a gigantic RCA video camera. Her favorite piece from that era? “Our Jeremy video (Pearl Jam). We’d mastered the function of the ‘insert’ button. We traumatized a classroom of stuffed animals. It was epic.”
Following the 4th season wrap-up of WNO in Spring 2007, she went to work producing her own music video for the song “The Sari (W)rap,” which she co-wrote with fellow Siblings of Doctors member, Ranjit Souri, for the sketch comedy troupe Stir-Friday Night! while they both lived in Chicago. She has since parlayed the song into the album’s title track, as well as a film-festival favorite video. But it wasn’t until its appearance at the 2008 Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles that the album’s possibility was born.

“There, I ran into Sammy and Anchal Chand, and of course, my evil twin and genius, Timothy Nishimura. wrap.htmlshapeimage_8_link_0
